Kicking off at 10:00, we were humbled by the amazing turnout of enthusiastic volunteer kennel builders who arrived in spite of the cold and rainy weather. For the next five hours the hanger and both the massive marquees were filled with the sounds of hammering, laughter and friendly banter, but above all it was the overwhelming sense of goodwill in the air that left the biggest impression.
"Words cannot describe how amazing the SA MAST Kennel Build 2013 was for The Bravetti/Visagie Family. When Club Travel urged us to get involved, we knew a Ferrari themed kennel would have to be 'spectacular'. As much as the nieces and nephews couldn't hold themselves back in terms of getting to the actual painting, we left the real Ferrari emblem artwork up to our very own 'Picasso' in the family. It was truly a family effort from a 2 year old niece to a 62 year old granny – everyone got stuck in and we walked away very happy with the two kennels we built and painted. I cannot begin to imagine the logistics of putting a day like this together, but everything ran so smoothly and we are certainly sure to be back next year! What an amazing opportunity to teach the little ones in the family how important it is to give back and to always care for animals. Well done to all involved."

There were so many amazing stories, but ones that stood out were the couple who came along to participate on their 40th Wedding Anniversary, the three generation teams, the groups of young people who had given up their Saturday mornings, the individuals who joined teams with strangers and the two teams from Pollsmoor Prison who not only built their own two kennels, but helped others build theirs too.
As promised, prize giving took place right on schedule. Congratulations must go to kennel number 13 for securing 1st place, kennel 176 for 2nd place and kennel 62 for 3rd place. Well done!
But everybody who braved the cold and pitched up, armed with a hammer, a smile and the determination to make a difference in the lives of underprivlidged dogs in Khayelitsha deserves to feel super proud of themselves.
THANK YOU TO ALL!
Photographs of the lucky pet guardian and their needy dogs who receive a beautiful kennel from SA.MAST will be posted on our website at regular intervals throughout September – keep an eye out for these notifications.
Anyone that can help us out with cars or bakkies with tow-bars, or with the loading and offloading of the kennels, please email samast@samast.co.za.
We promise you will have fun!
