SAMAST December 2013

To date our SA.MAST facility has successfully hosted 279 mass sterilisation and primary treatment days. Over 7000 patients have benefitted from our FREE services.

A message from Tamsin Nel, Founder and Managing Director of SA.MAST.

I am profoundly grateful.

I am profoundly grateful for a year that threw almost every conceivable challenge our way, but that you believed enough in who we are, what we stand for and what we are doing and supported us in meeting those challenges head on.

Ok, I will admit that there were private tears thrown into the mix too. Sometimes they were tears of profound sorrow, sometimes of rage and sometimes of pure unadulterated joy. There were times I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning, but the thought of our staff going beyond the call of duty time and time again, and yes, even at times putting their lives on the line to do what MUST be done to help tens of thousands of animals living in abject poverty alongside their equally impoverished guardians got me up out of bed and going.

I am profoundly grateful for having had the opportunity look into so many pet guardian's eyes and to see that their despair had been replaced with hope. Hope for a better tomorrow.

I am profoundly grateful to know that come what may next year, I / we are still in a position to pursue our dreams to make tomorrow, and the next day and the day after that better, healthier and happier than the one before.
I am profoundly grateful!

(Leah, thank you for the cake and Bruce Catering for the veggie platters!)

A year we will NEVER forget!

2013 was not an easy year for SA.MAST, but despite being robbed, being held at gun point and losing two (!) of our patient vehicles to complete engine failure and then to a drunken unlicenced driver, we STILL managed to sterilise almost two thousand patients and respond to almost 1000 emergency medical assist call outs – not to mention the many, many cats dogs, kittens and puppies who we managed to re-home after they had been abandoned or were found to be severely neglected or abused.

Because of all the encouragement and support YOU have given SA.MAST, there are thousands and thousands of grateful cat and dog guardians in Khayelitsha and hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs that will NOT be borne into an environment that is unable to support them.

SAMAST

THANK YOU to ALL our supporters for
helping SA.MAST to make a HUGE difference this year.
We know who you are and we are eternally grateful for your continued support!

BC Motors

A special thanks must go out to BC Motors for taking over the maintenance and repair of our vehicles. We cannot begin to stress the importance of our vehicles, without these precious assets we would not be able to collect our sterilisation patients or attend to emergency medical assist calls.

SAMAST

Another BIG thank you goes to all those who donated towards the financing of a reliable animal ambulance. Again, we know who you are and we will forever be in your debt.

SAMAST

We are urgently looking for a reliable bakkie to buy to use as an animal ambulance and to help with the collection of all our sterilisation patients. If you have a reliable bakkie with a canopy and tow bar for sale please email us on samast@samast.co.za to discuss. Don't forget to send photos and vehicle specs.

Khayelitsha Activity Report:
01 January – 01 November 2013

SAMAST

1651 sterilisation procedures have been successfully performed on cat and dog patients from Khayelitsha at our facility. All patients were collected from and returned to their homes. A further 30 emergency medical assist patients were also sterilised.

Bite Wound

Over 900 patients have received emergency medical care / intervention. Please note that many of these patients also then received repeat treatments for conditions such as TVT or mange. A BIG thank you to the PDSA and AWSS for allowing us to take our patients to them and providing the much needed medical attention.

Bath Time

1651 patients have been vaccinated at our facility.

About 5000 patients have been de-wormed at our facility or at their homes.

Over 8000 patients have been treated for ticks and fleas at our facility or at their homes.

Food

About 16 tons of cat and dog food has been distributed to needy pets.

Over 50 dogs were released from a life of misery where they were tied up with short pieces of rope or heavy chains. Happily, they are now on running wires.

SAMAST

Over 200 dogs / puppies have received specially made kennels and easy to clean waterproofed cushions. The majority of the kennels were made at our annual kennel building event on 31 August.

Mom and pups

0 is STILL the amount of funding we have received from the W.C Government.
